Thousands of people drive or take a bus every day on their way into and through Norwich from the northern side of the city. But many are unaware of our specialist residential care home nestled within the local community.

Thomas Tawell House has been a care home on the site for over 50 years where we provide care and support for up to 37 older people. We have refurbished the home which supports people with multiple care and support needs, but has a speciality in supporting those with a sensory impairment, specifically those who have a sight impairment.

The home is named after Thomas Tawell (1763 – 1820); an ironmonger who, upon turning blind around 1805, generously bought property and land at Magdalen Street in Norwich to open “an institute for the benefit of the ‘Indigent Blind’ in Norfolk and Norwich.” His story and legacy was covered in an excellent article by Derek James in 2018: EDP Thomas Tawell article

Until late 2022, the home was run by Vision Norfolk, a dedicated charity supporting and assisting people since 1805. They continue to provide housing and support at Hammond Court and the Bradbury Activity Centre, both situated next to Thomas Tawell House.

We have invested heavily into an extensive refurbishment programme at the home, including renovation of the bedrooms and living areas to create bright, inviting and comfortable spaces. Specialist flooring and colourways are used in the home to support residents with sight impairments, which helps them in finding their way around the home. Outside is a private, welcoming, accessible garden area designed to promote a sensory experience for the residents to enjoy.

Ellie Johnson is the manager at Thomas Tawell House: “Our home is in such a lovely position in Norwich. Many people don’t realise we’re here, but when they come to see us, they see what a lovely setting it is and what we have to offer. We’re planning on lots of events and activities to welcome people to visit us and find out how we can support them with their short term or longer term care needs.”
